Thirty One Songs To Stop The UK’s Biggest Killer Of Young Men
Quick straw poll, what do you think the biggest killer of young men in the UK is? Motor accidents? Alcohol? Drugs? Well 9 out of 10 of you won’t realise that it’s suicide, there were four and a half thousand suicides in the UK last year and over three thousand of them were young men that took their own lives.
There are many reasons for this, not least that young men can find it hard to ask for help when it comes to dealing with personal problems. It’s something that Factory Foundation founder Esther O’Callaghan OBE is determined to change.
Esther has got together with Manchester DJ Legend Dave Haslam and some of Manchester’s finest bands, new and old, to produce the Thirty One album to raise money for CALM (the Campaign Against Living Miserably).
The album contains tracks from across the range of Manchester Bands, from the likes of Elbow, Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds and Everything Everything to local heroes Barry Adamson, Jez Kerr and many others.
CALM works, that’s already been proved in Liverpool where they’ve made real progress in reducing suicide among young men and raising awareness of the issues and as CALM Director Jane Powell told me herself, this isn’t a charity that is going to be around for years, rolling on and on indefinitely. They have a clear objective in reducing suicide among young men and it is an objective which is achievable.
