Newborn Portrait Photography

From the moment you see that little blue line you know your life is never going to be the same again. Nine months or so later and you have the most precious gift in the world in your arms. There’s no doubt about it, a newborn baby changes your world and your life forever.

You’ll spend half of your time gazing at your newborn, wondering how on earth you managed to create something so amazing and the other half so completely overwhelmed by the love you feel for them. Yes – we know that there’s no time here for you to sleep!

Your relationship with your beautiful new arrival is a series of amazing moments you’ll never forget – the first time your baby wraps their tiny hand around your thumb, the first time they open their eyes, the first time they smile at you (yes we all know it’s probably wind but let’s just enjoy the moment).

You, your family and friends will take many photos of your baby in these first few weeks – and will continue to do so for the rest of their life. By the time your baby is four months old you’ll have a mountain of snaps to work your way through and choose your favourites.

Taking part in a Newborn Portrait Shoot with Mike Gatiss Photography ensures that you capture those first precious moments you have with your baby and a promise that you will walk away with beautiful images you can enjoy immediately and cherish forever.

What Happens at a Newborn Portrait Session

You’ll notice from the start that the Newborn Portrait Session is all about creating a happy and relaxed atmosphere. You can come to the studio so that you don’t have to think about whether the house is clean and tidy, or to make it easy while you’re still adapting to your new arrival I can come to you. If you would like me to come to your house I’ll be turning up with my baby poser (a lovely soft bean bag specially shaped to support your newborn baby) and a light or two in case there isn’t enough natural light.

Ideally we will photograph your newborn baby in the morning while they are still well rested and well fed. The shoot will last around two hours but we’re easy if the little one has a grump and needs some time out – we allow time for that.

Newborn babies look absolutely gorgeous the way Mother Nature intended them but we have plenty of time for costume changes so if you’d like some portraits in that sweet outfit Grandma bought or the cute hat you just couldn’t resist there’s no problem.

A week or two after we’ve captured the beautiful portraits of your newborn baby we’ll arrange a viewing session for you to show you your portraits and choose the ones you would like to keep.

When should I book my Newborn Portrait Session?

The one thing you can guarantee with a newborn baby is that they’ll arrive when they are good and ready and not until. It’s best to get in touch with us at least a month or so before your due date so we can make sure we are available around arrival time.

Newborn Portrait Sessions generally take place in the first couple of weeks. That way we know we will capture the first precious moments.  Newborn babies make beautiful subjects for portrait photography and as long as they’re fed, clean and rested they’re content to have all those tiny details recorded.

What happens if my baby is feeling really groggy on the day we’ve arranged the Newborn Portrait Session?

Just let us know as soon as possible and we’ll do everything we can to rearrange a new date that suits you.
